Analyzing Technical Elements

I chose to comment on a few of the different types of shots, focus, camera movements, as well as angles in this blog post. The movie that I have chose is "Avengers Endgame" released in 2018. Reason why I chose this film is because it is a combination of Science fiction and superheroes. Moreover, I am a fan of marvel movies and shows in general.

The scene that we are working with is known as the "portal scene". In this scene we get the use of a low angle shot. In this low angle shot, we see a dangerous monster. with its leash being unleashed from around its neck, as it heads towards Captain America (protagonist) The meaning behind this low angle shot is to depict the size and the aggressiveness this creature holds against the protagonist. Furthermore, the audience can derive the meaning of something that is shocking and scary of the creature being portrayed as dominant.

Secondly, we see the use of a combination of a close shot on the protagonist's face along with the shallow focus. In this, we can see the bloody expression of the protagonist, struggling. The middle and background is completely blurred. The reason why is because the creators would want the audience to mainly focus on the protagonist's face as he is grunting, panting, and struggling. The audience can derive the meaning of perseverance of the protagonist as he is does not giving up despite being all beat up.

Next, we see the use of a wide shot. In this particular shot, we see the distance and the face off between the antagonist along with his army of aliens and the protagonist. We can also see the destruction caused by the battle. The meaning the audience can derive from this scene the level of threat the antagonist portrays and how powerful he is. The camera work in this shot is steady as we see the protagonist slowly walks towards the threat to fight despite being alone. Which highlights bravery.

Furthermore, we see the use of zoom in movement of the camera. In this scene we see the protagonist walking towards the camera, stopping, and the camera slowly zooms in to his facial expression. The audience can derive the meaning from this camerawork on the fact that the protagonist's realization as he looks down, then slowly looks up with his mouth as he puts his fingers on his ear as someone just spoke to him. The audience can also get a sense of confusion as the camera continues to zoom in on his face.

Moreover, we see the use of a crane shot. In this shot, we see hundreds of thousands of people slowly walking out of opening portals. This shot signifies the epic size and scale of the setting as the camera moves back showcasing everyone coming out. The audience can derive the meaning of epic battle that will take place with the portrayal of this scene.

Last but not least, we have a standard focus shot. In this shot, we see the protagonist also known as the foreground of this shot, complete focus. With the middle and the background slightly out of focus. The audience is encouraged to mainly focus on the protagonist's facial expression and his movements. The audience can derive a sense of feeling of relief as we see the protagonist heavy breathing, as his allies showing up besides him to fight with him. The audience can be aware of the immediate surroundings but not distracted by the details of them.
